How to Encourage Gildan to Improve Their Practices

1. Understand What Gildan Is Already Doing

Before taking action, it is important to know the baseline:

  • Public reports: Gildan publishes an annual sustainability report (Environmental, Social and Governance report) and a Modern Slavery Report.
  • Memberships and mechanisms: They are members of the Fair Labor Association (FLA), have grievance mechanisms for worker complaints, and operate some own factories.
  • Conclusion: 👉 In other words, they have a structure that can be influenced.

2. Write to Them Directly

Brands pay close attention to client feedback on ethical issues.

  • Send a message to Gildan's customer service (https://gildan.com/contact-us).
  • Express that you appreciate the quality of their products but would like more transparency regarding:
    • actual wages of workers in their factories,
    • guaranteed living wages.
  • Mention that you buy or plan to buy their products, but would prefer Fair Trade or Living Wage Certified models.

3. Support Organizations Monitoring Gildan

  • Share their campaigns on social media.
  • Sign or support petitions and open letters demanding fairer wages.

The more these NGOs demonstrate public demand, the more Gildan has incentive to improve practices.

4. Buy or Recommend “Gildan Ethical” Lines

Gildan already has “sustainability-focused” lines:

  • more responsible cotton
  • factories with reduced water consumption
  • improved environmental practices

Choosing these lines instead of basic models sends a strong economic signal.

5. Make Your Expectations Visible

Post on social media:

“I like the quality of Gildan t-shirts, but I would like to know if the workers making them are paid a living wage. #LivingWage #EthicalFashion”

Brands monitor this type of content: every public message counts more than a private email.

6. Act Collectively (If You Have a Store or Network)

  • Write to distributors (e.g., Ntextil, Wordans) requesting Fair Trade Gildan supply.
  • Multiple requests from professional resellers have a strong impact on Gildan.

7. Combine Ethics and Customer Education

On your website or in communications:

“We currently use Gildan 5000 for its durability while encouraging Gildan to improve conditions for its workers. We support efforts toward a living wage.”

This positive approach creates gentle pressure and aligns with an ethical brand image.

Letter to Gildan – Encouraging Ethical Practices

Subject: Encouraging ethical practices and living wage for workers

Dear Gildan Team,

I am writing to you as a loyal customer and regular user of your Gildan 5000 t-shirts.

First, I would like to acknowledge the quality and reliability of your products. However, I would like to draw your attention to the working conditions and remuneration of the workers in your production chains, especially in some overseas factories.

I strongly encourage you to continue your efforts to ensure:

  • a living wage for all workers in your factories and subcontractors,
  • safe and respectful working conditions,
  • increased transparency regarding actual wages and social audits.

As a customer and potential reseller, I would prefer to support your products if these measures are implemented effectively. I am convinced that a stronger commitment to social ethics will reinforce customer trust and loyalty.

Thank you for your attention, and I remain available for any further discussion.

Best regards,
